Pre-Digital Cycling in Texas

by admin on December 12th, 2010
Looks like I’m finally getting my buddy Wes Keeton blogging (http://weskeeton.posterous.com). I started racing with him when I was 19 years old. We raced for some time on The BikeSmith Team out of Lewisville, Texas. Both of us were fresh out of Cross Country (he was way faster then me) and we were killing it on the bikes. Good times.

Wes and I were just talking about how cool it would be to be in our prime today. Racers today have the benefits of some really cool technology. From Power Meters to Digital Cameras. Yep, there were no digital cameras when we were racing. So, the best we can do is surf through old shoe boxes for newspaper clippings and scratched up photos….real photos that are on PAPER!

Cycling is a great community sport. And the cycling community in Texas is very strong. I can honestly say that I think we would have enjoyed it much more if we had the advantages of technology back then. So, besides trying to drag my body back into form to enjoy more of the new-hi-tech-cycling community, we’re gonna try to find a few old pics to celebrate our age of cycling (Roughly 1989 – 1990′s). If any of you have any pics to share it would be awesome to see. Most of us back then have very few of our own. I suspect there are many shoe boxes out there that have not seen the light of day in over a decade. Just today Andy Hollinger posted a pic on Facebook of the Waco Wild West road race from 1991. I was looking to see which familiar faces I could spot.

I’ll start with just a few. There are not many that I have. But I’ll track some down and get them posted. Of course many of these feature yours truly.
